"All songs recorded on a 4-track cassette recorder," states the liner notes, which description paints a pretty good picture of Good Enough . This album is so lo-fi it's D.I.Y. Tender, unsure vocals deliver considerably studious lyrics over delightfully simple acoustic guitar rhythms. There is a definite "outsider art" atmosphere here, but more so than any fresh singer-songwriter in recent memory Short Hand's songs play like tuneful contemporary poems, real literature in...

This is a sampler mixtape spanning a good portion of Greg's home recordings. You could call most of these tracks "singer-songwriter", though there's a great deal of excitement, experimentation, and inertia below the surface of even the most straightforward offerings here. Pleasant vocals, plenty of pop hooks, and the perfect balance between serious and silly make this introductory compilation a must-hear.

Attila is a half an hour of folk-rock charged with delta wonk. Short Hand plays like a wild man on these twelve tracks. The instrumentation is raw, most striking his voice, which he wields like a voodoo stick to fling swamp mud at a rock 'n' roll sky. Thematically, the song cycle is just as solid and forceful, taking up subjects like self-assurance and existential fearlessness and evoking giants of history like Attila the Hun and Muhammad Ali that reverberate even through the "softer"...

Short Hand's second long-play, originally recorded and released physically in 2007, takes an Olympian leap forward from his debut Good Enough . Where Good Enough was a naive, folksy bedroom affair, Toward Orange is full of confidence and carnival vibe. The production value is quite a bit better than his debut, but more importantly, Short Hand really stretches his artistic muscle here, the result sounding like a bookish Tom Waits shin dig. Well-read without being wordy, the album showcases some...

Peter Davis's Short Hand is back for a fourth LP. Horses in the Chest is a decidedly even set of tracks that feels like a return to roots for both artist and listener. Short Hand hones his considerable skill for quirky instrumentation and noodling with a quiet acumen here. The album sounds dusty, sometimes old-timey, sometimes clearly planted in modern indie America--some of the songs like spirituals, some like angular contemporary paintings, all of them somehow familiar.

The Infinite Lute Compilation is a collection of minimalist but alive cold wave tracks by Zeru ta Lur. Zeru ta Lur is French artist Bertrand Escaffre's homage project to Joy Division and Martin Hannet. This specific collection was compiled by Bertrand specifically for Infinite Lute. We thank him, and we think you will too.

These are bedroom recordings, bare acoustic guitar and voice. These are bedroom recordings, yet the performance is perfectly tensed, vast, arresting. Beside what’s immediately audible you can also hear a rapt audience filling a room. As a whole, the album feels wintry and faintly smoky, like Wystan Whitman is filling you in on current events while he stirs a slowly cooking stew. This one leaves plenty for leftovers and re-listens.
